World Earth Day

22 April Earth Day

Earth Day is the name used to indicate the day on which the protection of the environment and the protection of planet Earth is celebrated. The United Nations celebrates this anniversary every year, a month and a day after the spring equinox, April 22nd. The celebration involves as many nations as possible and 193 countries are taking part today. In 1969, during a UNESCO conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, first celebrated on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

Earth Day which is once a year

This day of nature balance was then sanctioned in a proclamation written by McConnell and signed by the United Nations Secretary-General U Thant. Born on April 22, 1970 to emphasize the need for the conservation of Earth’s natural resources, as a university movement, over time, Earth Day has become an educational and informative event.

Our Earth and the universe

Ecological groups use it as an opportunity to evaluate the problems of the planet: the pollution of air, water and soil, the destruction of ecosystems, the thousands of plants and animal species that disappear, and the depletion of non-renewable resources (coal, oil, natural gas). We insist on solutions that allow to eliminate the negative effects of human activities; these solutions include the recycling of materials, the conservation of natural resources such as oil and fossil gases, the ban on the use of harmful chemicals, the cessation of the destruction of key habitats such as wet forests and the protection of endangered species.

Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on the environmental issues facing the world.

Demonstrations around the planet

Everyone, regardless of ethnicity, gender, how much they earn or in which part of the world they live, has the ethical right to a healthy, balanced and sustainable environment. Earth Day is firmly based on this principle. On April 22, 1970, 20 million American citizens, responding to an appeal by Democratic Senator Gaylord Nelson, mobilized in a historic demonstration in defense of our planet. Today, this principle of current relevance will be mobilized again in 193 countries of the world.

2009

Earth Day in 2009 marked the beginning of a large awareness campaign called by the organizers “Green Generation Campaign” whose main points are the search for a future based on renewable energy, which will put an end to our common dependence on fossil fuels , including coal. A personal commitment to responsible and sustainable consumption. The creation of a “green economy” that takes people out of poverty by creating millions of “green jobs” and also transforms the global education system into a “green” education system.

April 22, 2009, the day of the anniversary, is the occasion for thousands of events organized in schools, communities, villages and cities around the world. In Italy, for the third consecutive year, Nat Geo Music, the National Geographic music channel, will promote the event.

In Rome, in the evening, there was a great concert in Piazza del Popolo, with Ben Harper and other international and Italian artists. In theaters, a preview of the film Earth – Our Earth produced by DisneyNature, a hymn to Earth and its beauty.

2010

On April 22, 2010 in Rome a concert was held at the Circus Maximus in which Pino Daniele and Morcheeba took part. It was broadcast by Nat Geo Channel (channel 710 Sky)

After the 2010 campaign for the 40th anniversary of World Earth Day, the 2011 edition will be organized around the “Billion Acts of Green”. The “Billion Acts of Green” are commitments of individual citizens, associations, companies, organizations and governments that aim to improve life in a sustainable way. The goal is to register one billion shares before the Earth Summit to be held from 14 to 16 May 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to raise awareness among the governments that will participate in this fundamental event. In Italy, a similar campaign has been launched called “Common sense actions”. Anyone can register their action directly from the World Earth Day website by taking a concrete commitment that will improve the environment. All registered shares will be sent to the EDN and will contribute to increase the “Billion Acts of Green”.

2011

On April 20, 2011 in Rome the concert was held at Villa Borghese with guests such as Patty Smith and Carmen Consoli; then broadcast on April 22, 2011 on Sky Uno.

On April 22 the concert was held at the Palapartenope in Naples, which was attended by Anggun, Enrico Ruggeri, Mario Riso, Sud Sound System, Pino Scotto and other artists of the Rezophonic project; was presented by Serena Dandini. The goal for World Earth Day 2012 was to “Mobilize the Planet”, which is a local mobilization of all those who wanted to help the planet.
